Mercedes Benz MB W170 / R170 SLK-Class

Predecessor ---
Successor R171 SLK-Class

The Mercedes Benz MB R170 is a two-seater Mercedes Benz SLK-class roadster, which was produced from autumn 1996 to early 2004. It was the first cabrio for a long time, which was equipped with a fixed, hinged steel roof. This hinged steel roof, also called Retractable Hardtop or Vario roof disappears completely and automatically in the trunk of the vehicle.

Because the R170 made of steel, it combines the advantages of a hardtop and offers the flexibility of a folding top. This makes the SLK both roadster AND coupe. The Vario roof folds out of the boot within 25 seconds in the R170 model series. Due to this technology, the trunk volume decreases with the roof open from 348 to 145 liters. The R170 is the best-selling roadster in Germany and replaced the Mazda MX-5 in the sales statistics.

The technically based on the C-Class W202 Roadster was subjected to a facelift in February 2000. In addition to optical changes, the engine range experienced a significant renovation.

  • The 2-liter entry-level engine was upgraded with a compressor.
  • For the first time, a six-cylinder was also available in the SLK series.
  • The engine of the SLK 320 corresponds to the familiar from other series 3.2-liter six-cylinder in V-shape, with three valves per cylinder and dual ignition.
  • For the first time, this engine could be chosen with a manual gearbox. In all other series, the automatic transmission was standard.
  • Die Leistungsspitze im SLK markiert der SLK 32 AMG mit 260 kW (354 PS).
  • The power peak in the SLK marks the SLK 32 AMG with 260 kW (354 hp).

With the MOPF (model care), ESP and the manual six-speed gearbox were introduced as standard in all models. The interior decoration used higher quality materials.

  • Externally, the facelifted SLK can be recognized by new sills and aprons as well as by the distinctive turn signals in the mirror housing.

  • In the spring of 2004, the R170 was replaced by the Mercedes Benz R171. Based on the R170 the Chrysler Crossfire was produced until the end of 2007.
